Pizzo truffle

The “Tartufo di Pizzo,” named for its imperfect spherical shape and color (cocoa powder) reminiscent of the more famous truffle of the earth, is a traditional gelato from Pizzo Calabro, the first in Europe to obtain the IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) designation.

It’s a hazelnut gelato shaped into a semi-sphere, strictly by hand, with a core of melted dark chocolate and coated with a dusting of bitter cocoa and sugar. In Pizzo Calabro, there are about twenty gelaterias that sell the authentic local artisanal truffle, some of which also export the typical product to other regions.
